READY TO MAKE AN IMPACT?
STEP ONE:
Learn what each Workgroup accomplishes.
-
The purpose of this group is to thoughtfully elevate student voice in three primary ways:
a. Fully participating in the community meeting process.
b. Collecting and telling their own stories to a variety of stakeholders
c. Speaking in community wide spaces. -
The purpose of this group is to uncover resources that support youth now by:
a. Creating an education map of resources
b. Elevating at least 20 students to talk to and track academically and behaviorally
c. Building a justice engaged hotline for students and families that need help. -
The purpose of this group is to ideate implementation strategies, benchmarks, and systems that support justice engaged students by consistently thinking though the following questions:
a. What role can schools play when students leave confinement?
b. what incentives/disincentives exist for staff to support?
c. What development is needed to create/sustain this work?
d. What trainings do we need to create to effectively implement/evaluate? -
The purpose of the Legal/Policy workgroup is three-fold:
1. To conduct legal and policy research around issues that justice engaged youth frequently encounter when trying to re-enter or continue in school after being arrested, convicted and/or incarcerated for a crime.
2. Utilize research to produce:
a) A simple and concise Justice Engaged Student Bill of Rights (JESBOR) that clears up confusion that currently exists at the intersection of justice and education systems and can be used by students, families, schools and justice personnel.
b) A guidebook that will provide the legal basis for the JESBOR that can be used as a support document for JESBOR3. Through this research and production, identify legal and policy gaps that can be addressed through legislation.
-
The purpose of this group is to stay in communication with and develop an understanding of all of the supporters we have within agencies. (Eg. probation officers, HHS, etc.)
-
The purpose of this group is to manage internal and external communications for the JES-CO initiative and engage key audiences to raise awareness and build support for the campaign.
